Operations Management and Throughput
Find the constraint that actually limits output, and stop optimising the parts that do not.

Overview
Improvement effort is often spread across a process rather than concentrated where output is actually limited. This programme covers process mapping, constraint identification and the sequence of exploiting, subordinating and elevating a constraint, applied to the delegate's own operation.
Who should attend
Operations managers, production supervisors, and continuous improvement practitioners.
What you will be able to do
- Map a process as it actually runs rather than as documented.
- Identify the constraint that limits throughput.
- Exploit and subordinate before spending on capacity.
- Measure improvement in throughput rather than in local efficiency.
How it is taught
Short input, then work, across 3 days of roughly 6 teaching hours each. Exercises run on situations delegates bring rather than on a case study written for a different organisation. Cohorts are capped so that everybody is asked something.
Available as classroom, live online, in house.
Programme outline
Day 1
The process as it runs
- Mapping actual against documented
- Timing and queue observation
- Variation and its effect
- Where work waits
Day 2
The constraint
- Identifying the real limit
- Why local efficiency misleads
- Exploit and subordinate
- When to elevate
Day 3
Sustaining
- Throughput measures
- Moving constraints
- Standard work
- Improvement that holds
What you leave with
- A current state process map with real timings.
- A constraint identification with supporting evidence.
- An exploitation plan requiring no capital.
- A throughput measure set.

Fees are per delegate and cover tuition, all programme materials and the certificate. Travel, accommodation and visas are arranged by the delegate. Registration closes two weeks before a programme starts.
Certificate
A GATI certificate recording what was attended, issued after the programme has run and attendance has been taken. Attending at least 80 per cent of the days earns a certificate of completion; attending less earns a certificate of attendance stating exactly what was attended. Every certificate carries a code that anybody can check against GATI's own record.
It records participation. and GATI does not claim one it does not hold.
