Overview
This week sits between the chemistry and the equipment, covering the engineering decisions that connect them. It works through design basis and equipment sizing, the circuit configuration choices and what each commits the plant to, mass and energy balances around the grinding sections, and the performance monitoring that tells whether the design is being realised. It suits an engineer who has to specify, evaluate or defend a grinding installation rather than operate one.
Who should attend
Process engineers, project and study engineers, technical managers evaluating proposals, and plant engineers responsible for section performance.
What you will be able to do
- Establish a design basis from product and feed requirements.
- Size major equipment and check a vendor proposal.
- Build balances around the grinding sections.
- Compare circuit configurations on cost and flexibility.
- Monitor performance against the design basis.
How it is taught
Short input, then work, across 5 days of roughly 6 teaching hours each. Exercises run on situations delegates bring rather than on a case study written for a different organisation. Cohorts are capped so that everybody is asked something.
Available as classroom, live online, in house.
Programme outline
Day 1
Design basis
- Product range, fineness and capacity
- Feed characteristics and variability
- Availability and utilisation assumptions
Day 2
Sizing
- Mill and separator sizing
- Fan, conveyor and dedusting sizing
- Checking a vendor guarantee
Day 3
Balances
- Mass balance around the circuit
- Heat balance and moisture
- Gas flow and pressure profile
Day 4
Configuration
- Open against closed circuit
- Pregrinding options
- Flexibility for multiple products
Day 5
Performance
- Key indicators and their definitions
- Deviation from design, and its usual causes
- Reporting to management
What you leave with
- A design basis document for a grinding section.
- A vendor proposal review with the gaps identified.
- A performance monitoring set tied back to design.

Fees are per delegate and cover tuition, all programme materials and the certificate. Travel, accommodation and visas are arranged by the delegate. Registration closes two weeks before a programme starts.
Certificate
A GATI certificate recording what was attended, issued after the programme has run and attendance has been taken. Attending at least 80 per cent of the days earns a certificate of completion; attending less earns a certificate of attendance stating exactly what was attended. Every certificate carries a code that anybody can check against GATI's own record.
It records participation. and GATI does not claim one it does not hold.
