Exploration and Geology
Mining & Minerals Exploration Technology & Integrated Geoscience Studies
The capstone of the series: combining geology, geochemistry, geophysics and structure into one defensible target.

Overview
The individual disciplines of the series are useful separately and decisive together. This module is about the combination: building an integrated model from datasets that disagree, weighting each by what it can actually resolve, and producing a ranked target list somebody will spend drilling money on. It deals directly with the hardest part, which is deciding what to believe when geophysics says one thing and geochemistry another, and it finishes on presenting a target to people who will challenge it.
Who should attend
Exploration geologists and project managers, technical leads ranking targets, and anybody completing the exploration technology series.
What you will be able to do
- Integrate geological, geochemical, geophysical and structural data.
- Weight datasets by what each can genuinely resolve.
- Resolve conflict between datasets without ignoring one.
- Build and rank targets with stated confidence.
- Present a target to a technical challenge.
How it is taught
Short input, then work, across 5 days of roughly 6 teaching hours each. Exercises run on situations delegates bring rather than on a case study written for a different organisation. Cohorts are capped so that everybody is asked something.
Available as classroom, live online, in house.
Programme outline
Day 1
The datasets
- What each discipline can and cannot resolve
- Scale, resolution and coverage mismatch
- Data quality, and its effect on weight
Day 2
Building the model
- A geological framework first
- Layering geochemistry and geophysics onto it
- Structure as the common constraint
Day 3
Conflict
- When datasets disagree
- Testing alternatives rather than defending one
- Confirmation bias in a project team
Day 4
Targets
- Definition, ranking and confidence
- Drill testing and success criteria
- Value of information thinking
Day 5
Presenting
- Making a case to a technical audience
- Showing uncertainty without losing the argument
- Peer review, and acting on it
What you leave with
- An integrated model for a real area.
- A ranked target list with confidence stated.
- A target presentation delivered and critiqued.

Fees are per delegate and cover tuition, all programme materials and the certificate. Travel, accommodation and visas are arranged by the delegate. Registration closes two weeks before a programme starts.
Certificate
A GATI certificate recording what was attended, issued after the programme has run and attendance has been taken. Attending at least 80 per cent of the days earns a certificate of completion; attending less earns a certificate of attendance stating exactly what was attended. Every certificate carries a code that anybody can check against GATI's own record.
It records participation. and GATI does not claim one it does not hold.
