HAZOP Study Management Training Course
Running a HAZOP that finds the hazards, and closing out the actions so the study was worth holding.
- Duration
- 5 days
- Contact hours
- 30
- Level
- Intermediate
- Fee from
- US$1,500
Overview
A HAZOP is a disciplined conversation, and its quality depends almost entirely on how it is run. The common failures are procedural rather than technical: nodes drawn too large to be examined, a team without the operator who actually starts the plant, a chairman who supplies the answer, and a register of actions still open at the next study. This week is about the management of the study rather than the theory of the method, and delegates work from real drawings, including their own where they can bring them.
Who should attend
Process safety engineers and HSE managers who commission or chair studies, process and operations engineers who sit on teams, and project engineers responsible for closing out the actions.
What you will be able to do
- Decide when a HAZOP is the right method and when another technique answers the question better.
- Prepare a study so the team is not doing preparation in the room.
- Chair a session that examines a deviation instead of accepting the first answer.
- Record a finding so it is still intelligible to somebody who was not there.
- Close out an action register and evidence that the risk actually changed.
How it is taught
Short input, then work, across 5 days of roughly 6 teaching hours each. Exercises run on situations delegates bring rather than on a case study written for a different organisation. Cohorts are capped so that everybody is asked something.
Available as classroom, live online, in house.
Programme outline
Day 1
Choosing the method
- What a HAZOP examines, and what it does not
- Where a what if, a checklist or a LOPA is the better answer
- Studies through the project lifecycle, and revalidation
- Scoping so the study is finishable
Day 2
Preparation
- Drawings, data, and the state they have to be in
- Node selection, and why oversized nodes hide deviations
- Team composition, including the operator and the maintainer
- Schedule, session length and fatigue
Day 3
In the room
- Guide words and deviations applied systematically
- Chairing without supplying the answer
- Separating cause, consequence and existing safeguard
- Keeping a record while keeping the pace
Day 4
Risk ranking and recommendations
- Ranking consistently across sessions and across studies
- Recommendations specific enough to implement
- Distinguishing a safeguard that exists from one that is assumed
- What to escalate rather than record
Day 5
Close out
- Ownership, dates, and the register as a live document
- Verifying that the action changed the risk
- Rejecting a recommendation, and documenting why
- Carrying findings into the next revalidation
What you leave with
- A study plan with nodes, team composition and schedule for one of the delegate's own systems.
- A worked node from a real drawing, recorded in full.
- A close out procedure for the action register, with ownership and verification defined.

Certificate
A GATI certificate recording what was attended, issued after the programme has run and attendance has been taken. Attending at least 80 per cent of the days earns a certificate of completion; attending less earns a certificate of attendance stating exactly what was attended. Every certificate carries a code that anybody can check against GATI's own record.
It records participation. and GATI does not claim one it does not hold.
