Overview

Turnarounds overrun for reasons established long before the plant comes down. The work list was never frozen, scope arrived after the materials were ordered, long lead items were identified late, and the contractor was appointed without a realistic schedule to price. Once the plant is down the cost of every decision multiplies, so execution management is largely about having removed the decisions in advance. This week runs the cycle from work list development and freeze through to start up and close out, with the emphasis on the preparation phase.

It runs 6 times over the published calendar, in 6 cities. Every date is the same programme with the same content and the same certificate.

What you will be able to do

  • Develop and freeze a work list, and hold the freeze against late scope.
  • Identify long lead items early enough for the date to survive.
  • Build a schedule a contractor can price and be held to.
  • Manage discovery work without losing the critical path.
  • Close out so the next turnaround starts from evidence rather than memory.

Who should attend

Turnaround and shutdown managers and coordinators, maintenance and project engineers, planners, and operations and HSE staff with turnaround responsibilities.

Is the level right for you?

This is an advanced level programme. It assumes you are working in or moving into the area it covers, and it is built around your own material rather than a case study. If you are unsure, ask an advisor before registering rather than after.

Ask an advisor

How it is taught

Short input, then work. Across 5 days of roughly 6 teaching hours each, the balance sits deliberately with the second: a programme where the trainer talks for six hours produces notes rather than capability.

  • Your own material

Exercises run on situations delegates bring, not on a case study written for a different organisation in a different decade.

  • A capped cohort

Small enough that everybody is asked something. Executive programmes are capped tighter still.

  • Practice under scrutiny

The difficult conversation, the challenged assumption, the decision defended out loud. Judgement is not built by watching.

  • Something to take back

Each day ends with a thing you can use on Monday rather than a slide deck you will not reopen.

The programme, day by day

Day 1Why turnarounds overrun

Why turnarounds overrun

  • Decisions deferred into the execution window
  • Scope that arrives after the materials were ordered
  • Optimism in the duration, and where it enters
  • What the plant being down actually costs per day
Day 2Work list and freeze

Work list and freeze

  • Developing a list from inspection, defect and statutory need
  • Challenging scope, and the authority to decline it
  • The freeze, and the process for an exception
  • Scope change control once the list is fixed
Day 3Preparation

Preparation

  • Long lead items, identified against the critical path
  • Materials, kitting and staging
  • Contract strategy, and what the contractor can price
  • Resource, accommodation and the logistics around the site
Day 4Execution

Execution

  • Daily control, and the meeting that actually decides
  • Discovery work, assessed without stopping the path
  • Permit and isolation throughput as a constraint
  • Progress measurement that is not self reported
Day 5Start up and close out

Start up and close out

  • Reinstatement, testing and the handback sequence
  • Start up, and the defects that appear in the first week
  • Cost reconciliation against the estimate
  • Lessons recorded in a form the next turnaround can use

What you leave with

  • A work list development and freeze procedure with the gates defined.
  • A long lead and materials readiness plan for one turnaround.
  • A discovery work process that protects the critical path.

The certificate

A GATI certificate recording what you attended, issued after the programme has run and attendance has been taken. Attending at least 80 per cent of the days earns a certificate of completion; attending less earns a certificate of attendance stating exactly what was attended.

Every certificate carries a code that anybody can check against GATI's own record, which is what makes it worth holding. It records participation. This site will not imply one it does not have.

Questions

Who is Advanced Shutdown and Turnaround Management for?
Turnaround and shutdown managers and coordinators, maintenance and project engineers, planners, and operations and HSE staff with turnaround responsibilities. It runs at advanced level within Mechanical and Utility Engineering, so it assumes you are working in or moving into that area rather than meeting it for the first time. If you are unsure whether the level fits, ask an advisor before registering rather than after.
How long is it, and what does a day look like?
5 days, running to roughly 6 teaching hours a day. Sessions are built around your own material rather than a case study, so a day alternates between short input and working on something you brought. The full outline is on this page, day by day.
What does it cost, and what is included?
The next published date is Gaborone, Botswana at R15,000 per delegate. The fee covers tuition, all programme materials and the certificate. Travel, accommodation and visas are arranged by the delegate. Fees vary by city, and every published date shows its own.
Can it be delivered for my organisation only?
Yes. Any published programme can run as a private cohort, on dates that suit you, in your city or online, built around your own material. That is a different conversation from registering an individual, and it starts with what capability you are trying to build rather than with a course title.
What certificate do I get?
A GATI certificate recording what you attended, issued after the programme has run and attendance has been taken. Attending at least 80 per cent of the days earns a certificate of completion; attending less earns a certificate of attendance stating exactly what was attended. Every certificate carries a code that anybody can check against GATI's own record.
Is this available online?
Not in the currently published window. This programme is listed for classroom, in house. An advisor can tell you whether an online cohort is planned, or arrange one privately for your organisation.

Register on a published date, or tell an advisor what you need and they will come back with something specific rather than a brochure.
