Overview

Payroll has no good failure modes. It is right or somebody is not paid, and an error is simultaneously an employee relations problem, a tax exposure and an accounting misstatement. The common causes are a master file that anybody can edit, variable inputs arriving by email on the day of the run, no reconciliation between the payroll and the ledger, and statutory returns prepared from the payroll rather than reconciled to it. This week treats payroll as a controlled process, through the cycle and into the returns and the year end.

It runs 6 times over the published calendar, in 6 cities. Every date is the same programme with the same content and the same certificate.

What you will be able to do

  • Control the payroll master file so a change is authorised and traceable.
  • Run the cycle with a cut off that variable inputs actually respect.
  • Reconcile payroll to the general ledger and to the bank every period.
  • Treat benefits, allowances and deductions with the right tax consequence.
  • Prepare and reconcile statutory returns so a review finds nothing new.

Who should attend

Payroll managers and officers, HR staff responsible for payroll inputs, financial accountants who post and reconcile it, and internal auditors reviewing the function.

Is the level right for you?

This is an advanced level programme. It assumes you are working in or moving into the area it covers, and it is built around your own material rather than a case study. If you are unsure, ask an advisor before registering rather than after.

How it is taught

Short input, then work. Across 5 days of roughly 6 teaching hours each, the balance sits deliberately with the second: a programme where the trainer talks for six hours produces notes rather than capability.

  • Your own material

Exercises run on situations delegates bring, not on a case study written for a different organisation in a different decade.

  • A capped cohort

Small enough that everybody is asked something. Executive programmes are capped tighter still.

  • Practice under scrutiny

The difficult conversation, the challenged assumption, the decision defended out loud. Judgement is not built by watching.

  • Something to take back

Each day ends with a thing you can use on Monday rather than a slide deck you will not reopen.

The programme, day by day

Day 1The payroll as a control problem

The payroll as a control problem

  • Where payroll errors come from, in order of frequency
  • Segregation between HR, payroll and payment
  • The master file, and who may change what
  • Starters, leavers and the ones still being paid
Day 2Running the cycle

Running the cycle

  • A cut off that variable inputs respect
  • Overtime, shift and allowance inputs, authorised at source
  • Pre run exception review, and what to look at
  • Approval of the run, and the evidence of it
Day 3Pay, benefits and deductions

Pay, benefits and deductions

  • Taxable and non taxable elements, and the grey ones
  • Benefits in kind, and valuing them consistently
  • Statutory and voluntary deductions, and their priority
  • Terminations, leave pay and final settlements
Day 4Reconciliation and reporting

Reconciliation and reporting

  • Payroll to ledger, every period
  • Payroll to bank, and the unpresented items
  • Headcount and cost reporting that managers can use
  • Provisions for leave and for bonus
Day 5Statutory and year end

Statutory and year end

  • Returns reconciled to the payroll rather than prepared from it
  • Correcting a prior period without creating a second error
  • Preparing for a revenue authority or audit review
  • Records, retention and confidentiality

What you leave with

  • A control map of the delegate's payroll cycle with the authorisation points named.
  • A period end reconciliation pack covering ledger, bank and statutory accounts.
  • A checklist for the year end and the statutory reconciliation.

The certificate

A GATI certificate recording what you attended, issued after the programme has run and attendance has been taken. Attending at least 80 per cent of the days earns a certificate of completion; attending less earns a certificate of attendance stating exactly what was attended.

Every certificate carries a code that anybody can check against GATI's own record, which is what makes it worth holding. It records participation. This site will not imply one it does not have.

Questions

Who is Advanced Payroll Management Programme for?
Payroll managers and officers, HR staff responsible for payroll inputs, financial accountants who post and reconcile it, and internal auditors reviewing the function. It runs at advanced level within Finance, Accounting and Audit, so it assumes you are working in or moving into that area rather than meeting it for the first time. If you are unsure whether the level fits, ask an advisor before registering rather than after.
How long is it, and what does a day look like?
5 days, running to roughly 6 teaching hours a day. Sessions are built around your own material rather than a case study, so a day alternates between short input and working on something you brought. The full outline is on this page, day by day.
What does it cost, and what is included?
The next published date is Maseru, Lesotho at R15,000 per delegate. The fee covers tuition, all programme materials and the certificate. Travel, accommodation and visas are arranged by the delegate. Fees vary by city, and every published date shows its own.
Can it be delivered for my organisation only?
Yes. Any published programme can run as a private cohort, on dates that suit you, in your city or online, built around your own material. That is a different conversation from registering an individual, and it starts with what capability you are trying to build rather than with a course title.
What certificate do I get?
A GATI certificate recording what you attended, issued after the programme has run and attendance has been taken. Attending at least 80 per cent of the days earns a certificate of completion; attending less earns a certificate of attendance stating exactly what was attended. Every certificate carries a code that anybody can check against GATI's own record.
Is this available online?
Not in the currently published window. This programme is listed for classroom, in house. An advisor can tell you whether an online cohort is planned, or arrange one privately for your organisation.

Want to take this further?

Register on a published date, or tell an advisor what you need and they will come back with something specific rather than a brochure.
